Throughout Church history, Christians have lit candles each of the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day. Each candle represents a different expectation and anticipation of the Christian life, pointing us to Jesus and drawing us deeper into the Advent season.
Included in our Advent Bible study, Not Overcome, are weekly candle lighting liturgies. These are best read aloud and lit in community, so whether you gather good friends, a roommate, a spouse, or your family, we encourage you to invite someone to join you as you read these short liturgies aloud and light the candle for that week.
Our encouragement to you is to choose one day each week in December to light the candle of Advent. Traditionally, the Advent candles have been lit on Sundays, but you can choose any day of the week and make it sacred in your own way. As the readings are short, perhaps consider making a special meal to share with the people who join you for the lighting, or plan to sip tea together as you talk more in depth about what you have just read.
