Christmas comes at the darkest time of year. But the darkness that comes during the season of Advent can serve to point us to something great – someone greater. In the darkest of seasons – seasons in which the darkness outside reminds us of the darkness within – we wait all the more expectantly for the Light of the World. And, of course, this is what we celebrate each and every Christmas as those who follow Jesus. We celebrate the dawn of redemption shining into the world, bringing light and life to all who will cling to Jesus in faith.
From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture testifies to us of a battle between darkness and light. From the very first pages of Genesis, in which God powerfully speaks light into the dark nothingness of a pre-creation void, to the pages of the Old Testament, in which God poignantly made himself known to his people through various forms of fire and light, to the coming of the Messiah who said himself that he is the Light of the World, to the urging of the epistle letters, in which Christians are commanded and equipped to walk as "children of the light," this theme of light and darkness permeates the entire story of redemption.
In this 4-week study, we will look closely at the themes of light and darkness from Genesis to Revelation. We will see how God made his character known on the earliest pages of Genesis, trace the theme of light through the covenants, celebrate it in the Psalms, rejoice in the arrival of Jesus as the Light of the World in the gospels, and hear the call of the epistles to live as "children of the light." On every page, we will savor Scripture and rejoice in the God of light.
In this study we will:
- Understand the biblical theme of light and darkness from Genesis to Revelation
- Reflect on the advent season and what it means to be people marked by the first coming of Jesus, while we anticipate his second coming
- Grow in appreciation for the tradition of advent candle lighting throughout church history as we walk through four weeks of advent candle lighting liturgies that focus our hearts on Jesus
