When You Feel Spiritually Dry: Finding Joy in God’s Word Again – Encouragement for women who feel distant from God
There are seasons in the Christian life that feel dry and distant. You open your Bible, but the words seem flat. You go to church, but feel disconnected. You want to feel close to God, but it seems like He’s far away. If you’ve ever felt spiritually dry, you’re not alone. Many faithful women walk through similar seasons—and the good news is, God doesn’t leave us there.
1. You Are Not Alone, and You Are Not Broken
First, it’s important to know that spiritual dryness is a normal part of the Christian life. David, a man after God’s own heart, cried out, "My soul thirsts for you... in a dry and weary land" (Psalm 63:1). Even spiritual giants in Scripture experienced silence, struggle, and distance. These seasons don’t mean your faith is failing. Often, they are invitations to grow deeper.
2. Return to the Word, Even When It Feels Hard
When you feel dry, the last thing you may want to do is open your Bible. But this is where God meets us. Don’t wait to feel inspired to read—open the Word anyway. God is faithful to speak through it, even if it takes time. Choose a simple passage, like a Psalm or a Gospel story, and read slowly. Ask God to soften your heart and open your eyes to His truth.
"The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul." – Psalm 19:7
God’s Word revives us. Sometimes, that revival starts as a small flicker rather than a fire.
3. Ask for Help and Lean on Community
You don’t have to navigate spiritual dryness alone. Share with a trusted friend, mentor, or small group. Ask them to pray for you, to encourage you, and to remind you of truth when you struggle to believe it for yourself. The body of Christ is designed to build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11), especially when we feel weak.
4. Trust That God Is Still at Work
Just because you don’t feel God’s presence doesn’t mean He’s absent. God is always working, even in silence. He promises to be near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) and to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Cling to those promises.
Spiritual dryness is not the end of your story. It’s a season—not a sentence. As you continue to show up, open God’s Word, and seek Him in prayer, trust that joy will return. The same God who met you in the past will meet you again. And through His Word, He will restore your soul.
