Walking as Children of Light: Living Out Who You Are
When we think of Advent, we often picture candles flickering against the winter darkness. Light is one of the most powerful images of the season, reminding us that Christ, the Light of the world, has come—and that His light now shines through us.
Paul writes in Ephesians 5:8, “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” Notice he doesn’t simply say that we were “in” darkness—he says we were darkness. Our very identity was marked by sin and brokenness. But now, in Christ, everything has changed. We are not just forgiven; we are transformed. We are light in the Lord.
This new identity calls us to live differently. To walk as children of light means to let Christ’s truth and love shape our choices, relationships, and daily rhythms. It means that when we are tempted to hide, we instead step into the freedom of being known. It means that when the world around us is marked by anger, fear, or despair, we shine with the peace and hope of Christ.
Advent is the perfect season to practice walking in the light. Each candle we light, each carol we sing, each Scripture we read can remind us of who we are. We are no longer people stumbling in darkness—we are children of the Light, reflecting the glory of the One who came and who will come again.
As you reflect this week, consider these questions:
-
What is one area of your life where you feel tempted to hide in the dark?
-
How does remembering that you are “light in the Lord” change your perspective?
-
What is one simple way you can shine Christ’s light into your community this Advent?
Prayer for the Week:
Jesus, Light of the world, thank You for transforming me from darkness into light. Teach me to walk as a child of light in every area of my life. May my words, my actions, and my heart reflect You to a world that desperately needs Your hope. Amen.
