Light in the Darkness: God’s Promise to Reveal Who We Are

Advent is a season defined by light shining in the dark. Think of candles on an Advent wreath, twinkle lights on a Christmas tree, or the star that led the wise men to Bethlehem. Each of these reminds us of a deeper truth: that God sent His light into the world through Christ, and His light has the power to transform us.

John’s Gospel tells us, “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4–5). The darkness of sin, shame, and brokenness cannot stand against the brilliance of Christ’s light. And here’s the astonishing reality: when we place our trust in Jesus, His light not only illuminates the world around us—it shines into our hearts and shows us who we truly are.

Without Christ, we see ourselves dimly, as though in shadows. We may define ourselves by our failures, by what others have said, or by the burdens we carry. But when His light breaks into the darkness, we see clearly: we are beloved children of God, chosen, forgiven, and set apart to reflect His glory. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 5:8, “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

This is the invitation of Advent: to let Christ’s light expose the lies we believe about ourselves and replace them with His truth. As His children, we are not defined by the darkness that surrounds us—we are defined by the Light that dwells within us.

As you reflect this week, consider these questions:

  • Where in your life do you feel weighed down by darkness—whether fear, shame, or sin?

  • How does remembering your identity in Christ as a “child of light” give you confidence and hope?

  • What is one practical way you can reflect Christ’s light to someone else this Advent season?

Prayer for the Week:
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Light that no darkness can overcome. Shine into my heart this Advent season. Expose the lies that I have believed and replace them with Your truth. Help me to walk as a child of light, reflecting Your love and hope to those around me. Amen.
